There are now a number of platforms available for watching on-demand and live broadcasts from the UK’s existing broadcasters, new entrants, and smaller players. Alas choosing the right platform isn’t just as simple as looking for a device which suits your budget and requirements, but also finding one which has all the services you use available.
At the start of December 2015 an Android tablet will allow you to access most of the main services, however when it comes to watching on your TV though things are much less clear cut.
The Google Sheets file below is my attempt to keep track of service availability on Android devices, the Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV Stick, and Roku Streaming Stick. (Sorry, as I don’t have any Apple devices I won’t be following the Apple TV).
Right now the only platform which supports the main UK Broadcasters (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, Demand 5), major PAYG On Demand services (Now TV, Amazon Prime Instant Video, Netflix, and Google Play Music), and large Online Video services (YouTube and Vimeo) is the Roku. However even here BT Sport, UKTV Play (Dave, Drama, Really, Yesterday), and TVPlayer are unavailable.
